Even though my desire as an artist is to make the photographic images beautiful as works of art, they are actually only the by-product of the process involved in the project. Im much more interested in the video and the conversation/debate/argument that the two forms of visual representation have the potential to create. – Barbara DeGenevieve This is likely one of the greatest lessons Ive ever learned about art-making from a profound individual, of which I never worked with personally, nor had as an instructor--- A lesson that took me nearly 3 years to learn. Ill never forget the very first heated discussion I had with SAIC students over The Panhandler Project, the very guttural and visceral sensation I felt from the imagery of the work, nor the lightbulb that went on years later after I realized I finally understood the language that Barbara was speaking. The art wasnt in the photographs. The true art was in the conversation/debate/argument that the imagery in the photographs provoked. The tremendous reach and impact Barbara made, not only as an educator, but also as a breath-taking, risk-taking, fearless, and intelligent artist was beyond admirable and inspirational. Barbara was willing to take it there. She always saw the bigger picture. A visionary. For her students, peers, colleagues, friends, family, lovers, my heart is with you today. While her passing is indeed a loss, Barbaras legacy and generosity still has so much left to give. Lets remember this, as we remember her.
