The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher at 0933 hrs from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island, Balasore. According to ITR Director M V K V Prasad,the test-fire of the ballistic missile was fully successful . The Agni-I missile has a specialised navigation system which ensures it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision. Weighing 12 tonnes, the 15-metre-long Agni-I, which can carry payloads up to 1000 kg, has already been inducted into the Indian Army. Agni-I was developed by advanced systems laboratory, the premier missile development laboratory of the DRDO in collaboration with Defence Research Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat and integrated by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad. Hockey World Cup India has been awarded the 2018 mens hockey World Cup, the second time in a span of eight years the country will be hosting the mega event having successfully organised the previous edition three years ago. The announcements were made by FIH President Leandro Negre at a special ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland. The 2018 edition will see an expanded field with 16 teams competing in both mens and womens events. The 2018 womens World Cup will be held in England. The womens tournament is scheduled to take place from 7-21 July, with the mens event planned for 1-16 December. India last hosted the World Cup in New Delhi in 2010 while the next edition will be held next year in The Hague, Netherlands in the first two weeks of June Held every four years, the World Cup brings together the worlds greatest teams and most skilful players for the toughest, most competitive international hockey event. RDD-Doda To review functioning of Rural Development Department (RDD) and access physical and financial achievements registered under different schemes being executed by the RDD in the District especially MGNREGA, Assistant Commissioner Development, Doda Rakesh Kumar convened a general meeting of field functionaries of the department including Block Development Officers, Junior Engineers, Technical Assistants, Village Level workers besides GRS and Multi Purpose workers ( MPWs) yesterday. ACD stressed upon the field functionaries to give focused attention on qualitative working in rural areas especially under MGNREGA, so that durable and community assets get created for the benefit of the society. He presented a detail of achievements made by the RDD in the District Kumar impressed upon the field functionaries to work with devotion and come up to the expectations of the people. He asked the officers to work with Panchayati Raj Institutions and people in a coordinated manner so that aspirations and need of the people could be planned and implemented. Doda-Workshop District Development Commissioner, Ramban M. H. Malik inaugurated the two days workshop on “Support to State Extension Programme for Extension Reforms” under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) organized by the Agriculture Department yesterday. Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu and Director, SAMETI-Jammu Dr. K.S. Risam presided over the inaugural function and gave detailed background and importance of the Workshop on Thursday. DDC stressed upon the participants to get the training with dedication so that the motive of the training will achieved and further served for the upliftment of Agriculture scenario in our district as well as State. He impressed the technocrats of agriculture and allied departments to go in the field to impart the Know-how of scientific farming with modern agriculture machinery to farmers he also instructed the officers to aware the farmers about agriculture schemes launched by the state and centre government for the socio- economic development of farmers. Speaker-House Committees The Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Mubarak Gul has directed all the Chairmen of the Financial and other Committees of the House to work with utmost dedication and ensure that the functioning of House Committees result oriented. He asked them to conduct on the spot inspections and study tours to other States of the Country. This was stated by the Speaker while addressing a meeting convened to discuss the functioning of the House Committees here in the main hall of the Assembly Complex yesterday. The Chairmen of House Committees were also present in the meeting. The Chairmen briefed the meeting about the activities of their respective Committees and assured that the reports in this regard will be submitted well in time. Describing Action Taken Reports (ATRs) a very important for making the working of the Committees result oriented, the Speaker asked the concerned to take follow-up actions and conduct maximum inspections to examine the cases on-the-spot. While discussing the working of Petitions Committee, the Speaker asked for giving wide publicity about the working of Committee both in print and electronic media for the benefit of the general public. Rana-GBSF Gujjars & Bakerwal Student Federation (GBSF) yesterday organised a function at University Campus Jammu to honour Javed Ahmad Rana for his elevation as Deputy Chairman, J&K Legislative Council. Vice-Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof Mohanpal Singh Ishar, former Vice-Chancellor, BGSB University, Rajouri, Masood Choudhary, Dean of Jammu University, Professors, besides academicians, scholars and Students were also present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, . Rana said that Coalition Government is keen for the socio-economic upliftment of the Gujjar and Bakerwal community, adding that various initiatives have also been taken in this regard. Mir-Tour and Travel Bodies The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister, Mr. Ghulam Ahmad Mir has called upon the overseas Tour and Travel bodies to guide the people of their countries to the visit of Jammu and Kashmir, the most ideal tourist destination in the world. He assured that J&K is as peaceful State as other parts of the World and people of State are enthusiastic to welcome the foreigners on their visit here. Addressing the Concluding function of 4-day World Travel Market at Excel Center London, the Minister said that tour and travel operators can play an active role to promote tourism between Countries. He assured fullest cooperation of Jammu and Kashmir government to the foreign and domestic Tour and Travel Operators in this regard. He said that J&K government has taken several significant steps to upgrade the world class tourist infrastructure at varied destination of its famed regions, besides introducing new destinations and tourism activities in the State. The Tourism Minister assured the Tour and Travel Operators that State government would facilitate air travel of foreign tourists intending to visit Jammu and Kashmir. The Tourism Minister invited domestic and over seas’ Tour and Travel operators to see for themselves, varied tourism potential of the State. He said such a visit would help in showcasing the rich tourism potential of the State. He said that State government has also developed conventional tourism facilities in the State and Kashmir is an ideal place for holding national as well as international conferences. Chief Justice-Bar Describing bar as nursery of judges, Chief Justice, Mr. M.M. Kumar has said that learning which comes from the bar is unique. Earlier, in his welcome address Senior Advocate and President Bar Association Mr. M. K Bhardwaj said that the function has been organized to honour the five newly elevated judges and presented a brief insight into their meritorious background. US-Kashmir Underlining that India and Pakistan have to determine the pace, scope and character of their dialogue, the US has said it is open to exploring any role in resolving the Kashmir issue only if asked by them. According to a senior US official US has always held that it is for India and Pakistan to determine pace, scope and character of their dialogue. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during his meeting with President Barack Obama at the white House last month and during all his meetings, including that with Secretary of State John Kerry, had sought American help in resolving the Kashmir issue. But such a plea was immediately dismissed by the United States Government including Obama, arguing that it is for the two countries to decide on the pace, scope and character of the relationship. The issue never came up for discussion during Obamas meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the White House late September. According to informed sources, the US counselled the Pakistani leadership to work towards creating a conducive atmosphere to resolve all its dispute with India bilaterally. In fact the US leadership, including the President, was quick in raising the issue of continued terrorism emanating from inside Pakistan against India. BJP-Pahari People Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the coalition government of deliberately ignoring the Pahari speaking people of district Rajouri and Poonch as well as parts of district Kupwara of the Kashmir Valley. Addressing the media persons here today State Vice President of the Party Advocate Vibodh Gupta demanded that Pahari people be provided Scheduled Tribe (ST) status without any further delay. He termed ST Status as the birthright of the Pahari Community and warned the government of serious consequences if ST Status is not granted to Paharies. Mir-Radha Kumar Chairman All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (an apex body of Panchayat members of state) Shafiq Mir has strongly rejected the remarks of former Jammu Kashmir interlocutor Prof Radha Kumar in which later had reportedly said that the implementation of 73rd amendment of Indian constitution would erode the autonomy of the state . Reacting over her statement published in a section of media here today, Shafiq Mir described her statement as self contradictory saying that the said statement of Prof Radha Kumar was against the interlocutors report itself which they had submitted to the government wherein they had advocated for the implementation of 73rd and 74th amendments of Indian constitution in the state . President President Pranab Mukherjee has said governments effort to increase quantity in higher education must be matched with commensurate efforts to improve quality. Inaugurating the conference of Directors of National Institutes of Technology in New Delhi yesterday, Mr. Mukherjee noted that the government is investing huge amount of resources in higher education and countrys biggest strength in the coming years is going to be its demographic dividend. He said that this dividend is however something which can not be taken for granted adding the need is to urgently equip our youth with necessary skills and jobs. The President said that the Conference was being held just two days after India attained a very significant milestone in the field of space exploration through the launch of the Mangalaayan Mission. He stated that our space scientists and engineers have repeatedly demonstrated that given determination, leadership, hard work and resources, India is fully capable of attaining global excellence in fields of frontier technology. The example set by the ISRO can be emulated in a large number of other sectors in our country. The President expressed the hope that NITs of India will play a central role in leading the drive for quality engineering education across the country. Bhalla-Channi Government has earmarked Rs. 90 lakh for face lifting of Housing Colony (HC) in Channi Himmat and in this regard instructions have been issued to Jammu and Kashmir Housing (JKHB) to gear up their men and machinery in completing the proposed projects within stipulated time frame. This was informed by the Minister for Housing, Horticulture Raman Bhalla while interacting with the accompanied officers of the JKHB after launching face lifting projects at Sector-4 of Housing Colony in Channi Himmat, Jammu today. Bhalla said development of Housing Colonies in urban as well as in rural areas of the State was receiving main focus of the Government. He said the colonies would be developed on modern lines with all basic amenities like safe drinking water, road play field, super bazaar and recreational parks. The Minister asked for effective implementation of centrally sponsored Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana (RGAY) scheme for rehabilitation of slum dwellers, adding that the scheme aims at to tackle the problems of slum dwellers, adding that the scheme aims at to tackle the problems of slums in a definitive manner. He said Central and State Government were committed to improve the living condition of homeless. Speaker The Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Mubarak Gul today inspected on-going construction work of Rs. 104.44 crore Legislature Complex at Jammu and directed the executing agency Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) to gear up their field functionaries and speed up the pace of work of the project and complete it in a time bound manner. The direction was given by the Speaker during the visit to the site here. The Speaker called for close coordination between JKPCC authorities and Assembly Secretariat. He asked the executing agency to use standard material on the project and there will be no compromise on it, adding that any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated. Earlier, the speaker convened a meeting with the officers and engineers of JKPCC to discuss and review the overall progress and physical status of the project. It was informed that Rs. 19.32 crore have been spent on the project so far out of released funds of Rs. 36.94 crore. Omar The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has underscored the need for developing an accurate tracking mechanism of youth; post their training under the skill development mission. He said the success of the skill development mission can only be realised when placement of these youth and utilisation of their learnt skills is ensured, adding that this aspect is critical to the whole programme. While taking the review of J&K Skill Development Mission at a meeting he chaired here, Chief Minister said that State government besides engaging private players through initiatives like UDAAN and HIMMAT has simultaneously focused on enhancing the existing training facilities. He said our training programmes should be reflective of the requirements in the job market, adding that steps should be taken to devise an inbuilt mechanism in the course curriculum itself to ensure market oriented skill training to the youth. Omar laid special emphasis on imparting soft skills to youth across all training programmes to improve their communication skills and chances of getting absorbed in the job market where besides educational and technical qualifications special focus is laid on communication skills. The Chief Minister said that the State Government has fixed a target of skilling 9.1 lakh youth during the 12th Financial Year Plan adding we are moving forward in this direction. Sakina Seeking larger participation of women in development process, Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo today said time has come when they have to play a pro-active role in shaping the destiny of the State. Addressing a gathering of women at Vijaypur, Sakina made a fervent appeal to women to realise their potential and put in their best in soci-economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. She said that Women have made their presence felt in every sphere of activity and there is nothing that can retard their growth as equal partners in the decision making of the State. She exhorted the women to participate in social, economic and political affairs alongside attending to their domestic chores. The Minister said that women participation in growth and development will help the society march towards progress and prosperity with added vigour and enthusiasm. Sakina assured the people that the ISSS pending cases would soon be cleared. Cricket India handed out an innings and 51 run defeat to the West Indies in the first test match at Kolkata on day 3.
