Evening Reflection Saturday June 7, 2014 Today after sermon writing, shopping, gardening and laundry, I took an hour to sit in the back yard, on my nice long chair, under the birch tree – Kobo reader and coffee in hand. Our yard is an anomaly, really, in this neighbourhood. Most yards have one or two trees, and lots of grass. When we moved in here, the yard had nothing but a few “hens and chickens”. Over the years, we have grown – from tiny seedlings – spruce, white pine, blue spruce, red maple, clump birch, and cypress. I planted some bamboo a few years ago. There are Siberian iris and Korean lilac in bloom, clematis and lilies coming up, peonies in bud. About five years ago Norio planted a pear tree – which has tiny pears on it. In the front, there is a spruce and a European linden. On the ground beside the birch is hibiscus and bougainvillea in pots, wild columbine (which keeps coming up every single year, in a tiny plastic pot), strawberries, herbs. We have a lot of trees and things, and hardly any grass. Stretching out on the chair and looking up through red maple, birch and white pine, the sky was totally cloudless and incredibly blue. There were three families of birds today – blackbirds, warblers, and robins – and the cheeping of their babies when they left the nest to look for food. The mourning dove sat quietly down in the back, only really noticeable by the low cooing sound. Our aim was to turn the yard into an outdoor room, and so we have. Norio and I love to travel. We’ve done a lot of it. There are beautiful places all over the world, and we have fallen in love with all of them, and we know we could live in any one of them and be happy. We are fortunate enough to have a house in Japan with a beautiful garden. We go to Portugal every year, and rent a house with a gorgeous garden. Yet there is something about our little back yard here n Scarborough, which is as good for the soul as anywhere in the world - in some ways better. An hour sitting outside, under the trees, reading and listening to the birds, is heaven. Right here in our own little back yard.
