Well here is today’s interesting peace of information: In the 1980’s Justin Schmidt an entomologist subjected himself and his colleagues to the stings of 78 different stinging insects, recording data on the intensity and duration of their pain. Schmidt created a 5-point pain scale, numbered from 0 to 4. An insect that cant penetrate human skin ranks 0. The most painful stings rank 4 on the index. In addition to numerical data on the severity and duration of the pain, Schmidt offers some rather interesting and entertaining comparisons to help you understand the depth of his suffering. Fire Ant Pain Scale Rating: 1.2 Duration of pain: 2-5 minutes How the sting feels: Sharp, sudden, mildly alarming. Like walking across a shag carpet & reaching for the light switch. Bullet Ant Pain Scale Rating: 4.0+Duration of pain: 12-24 hours How the sting feels: Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like fire walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch rusty nail in your heel. Amazing what people do in the name of science.
