Ever experienced nipple damage? How did it happen? How long did it take to heal? What helped? An anonymous Leaky wrote in: My 5 week old and I have contentious nursing relationship. She was tongue and lip tied so BF has been painful. Those were corrected last week, but in the meantime I developed ductal thrush. Things were feeling better until yesterday when my LO bit me! I dont think she knows how to nurse without a shield, and I am so sore and have been for 5.5 weeks now plus exhausted from the lack of sleep that comes with having a new LO. Advice? Support? ~Krista Krista, that is horrible! Ductal thrush can be incredibly painful, Ive been there. It is sometimes misdiagnosed and it could be staph. Are you working with an IBCLC? This is pretty serious stuff and well offer all the support we can but you probably need to be seen by a professional lactation support specialist for some hands on help. We arent health care professionals, we can only offer personal experience, information, and support. It is possible that shes not ready to wean from the shield. While I understand wanting to ditch the shield as soon as possible, it may need to be a more gradual process. If she bit you, she wasnt latched correctly, maybe because shes used to the shield, maybe because her revision is bothering her, maybe because she needs to learn how to suck properly, or maybe because she wasnt actually hungry. It could be anything. Figuring that out can help in preventing it in the future. As for healing, I recommend a good nipple cream. With thrush in the picture I would use Motherlove Herbal Companys Diaper Rash and Thrush salve. They also have a nipple cream but with the herbs used in the diaper rash and thrush, there is are anti fungal agents that can help you heal. I also like coconut oil for my nipples in times like this. Im so sorry youre dealing with all this, it sounds like its been a rough road for you. Hang in there and again, I highly recommend working with an IBCLC.
