Ever wonder what Rochester Indymedia is? Rochester Indymedia is a grassroots, all-volunteer, anti-capitalist, open media collective of individuals collaborating together to create a democratic media that provides space for folks to tell their stories without the bias and filters associated with mainstream media. Rochester Indymedia is one collective of a global network of independent media centers around the world. We are a news source, not an “advocacy group.” We wear our biases on our sleeves and let people tell their own stories with little if any editorializing. We do not push the narrative of those in and with power. We are a news organization that looks at the same issues concerning our community that for-profit media does, but we take a completely different angle and deserve the same kind of respect when it comes to using our work that for-profit media feel they are entitled to when they share information with other for-profit media. We do not pretend that we are “objective,” “fair” or “balanced.” We do try to be as accurate as possible. We are not trying to please advertisers nor are we trying to maintain relationships with the power structure such as the police chief, the mayor, city council members, etc. So, we let people say what they need or want to say without someone filtering their words and stories to fit them into an already designed story. We are proud of out subjectivity and our bias. As I said above, we also strive to be as accurate as possible. We can be objective, fair and balanced—and indeed we are sometimes. However, we recognize that just because someone says they are objective, fair, and balanced, does not mean it is true. We publish from the point of view of those on the bottom—those who dont write history books, lead nations, start wars, or profit from economic collapses. We are media for and by the people. Some folks say they hate the media. Others dont care about it. Media shapes the way we look at and interact with the world. How the media operate and what they display can have consequences—far reaching consequences—such as life and death. We see media as a tool. Instead of being angry about the media or dismiss it, we invite you to BECOME THE MEDIA! We meet on every Thursday, 7-9pm, at the Flying FlyingSquirrel CommunitySpace, 285 Clarissa St. If you want to learn how to tell the stories that most affect you and your community, come on by. No experience necessary. (We are not meeting on Christmas.)
