Ever wondered what the genetic code of the now extinct Passenger Pigeon sounds like? Well, like this! tweeted Kirk O’Riordan, assistant professor of music today along with this recording. In November the Contemporary Music Ensemble presented Avian Requiem, an evening-length semi-theatrical piece. The work was composed by ensemble members and director O’Riordan, and includes transcribed bird songs, improvisation, live and pre-recorded electronics, and spoken texts. The concert featured special guests President Alison Byerly and Williams Center Gallery artist-in-residence Michael Pestel. The piece was presented in conjunction with the gallery’s exhibit Requiem: Ectopistes Migratorius, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon and continues through Sat., Dec.13th. https://calendar.lafayette.edu/node/11930
