Ever wondered where did the names of the months came from? Well, here it is! January- named for a Roman god, Janus, guardian of gates. (often shown with two faces, looking forward and backward) February- named for Februalia, a Roman time of sacrifice. Mars- named for Mars, the Roman god of war. (the end of winter meant fighting could begin again) April- "aperire", Latin for "to open", as in flower buds. May- named for Maia, the goddess of plant growth. June- "Junius", the Latin word for the goddess Juno. July- named after the Roman ruler Julius Caesar August- named for Augustus, the first Roman emperor. September- "septem", the Latin word for seven. (the Roman year began in March) October- "octo", the Latin word for eight. November- "novem", the Latin word for nine.
