Every day I am asked, “How are you?” My response is either “Fine, thank you” or “I am good” or something along those lines. But what I would really like to say is, “Yes… I am okay… I have my eyesight, although not perfect. I can still see the glorious sunsets, the antics of a puppy, the smile of a child. And the most important, I can see if there are any insects in my food. I have my sense of hearing, even though a bit impaired. I can hear others tell me they appreciate me. I can hear the music, which takes the wrinkles out of my day. I have my sense of smell, which acts as a smoke alarm. It keeps bad breaths away. And it is absolutely heavenly to smell that freshly ground coffee on a lazy Sunday morning. I have my sense of taste. I can tell when something has gone bad or sour. Also, I can pig out while I chill out. I have my sense of touch. The joy of touching a baby’s silky smooth cheeks, patting your dog, running your hands through your partner’s hair makes you feel you are not alone. I am okay, you see. I can walk, even though I may stumble. I can talk, sometimes nonstop. I can laugh, even when nothing is funny. I can cry anytime I want to. In fact, I am more than okay. How about you, my friend?”
