“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” James 1:17 A kind father will not give his son a stone instead of the bread the son has requested. But what if a son asks for a Harley and received only a bicycle? Like that son we may often ask for the moon when a little stardust is all we really need. Our God is the perfect Father and He knows what is best. God wants us to pray, fervently and persistently, as indicated by the words ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK. Even so, we should not regard prayer as the key to a great vault in the sky full of riches to be poured on us frivolously at our request. James dealt with that greedy mindset in short order with these words: ‘You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures’ (James 4:3). Maybe that explains why our prayers sometimes seem to go unanswered. When the Lord says no, James is asking us to consider, in the light of God’s great love or us, why we choose to pray for the things that we pray for. Lift the Savior Up!
