Every major English translation of the Bible refers to the Earth - TopicsExpress

Every major English translation of the Bible refers to the Earth as a circle or disk. This is no small source of embarrassment for fundamentalists who dont want to go so far in their science denial as to claim the world is flat. As they so often do, they try to claim that their grasp of Hebrew is superior to that of any major Bible translator and the original author of Isaiah must have really meant sphere. Even ardent King James only believers do this. However, this view is completely at odds with the original text. The different Hebrew words for a two dimensional circle or disk, vs a three dimensional sphere or ball, are both used in the Book of Isaiah. He uses the word דּוּר duwr (Strongs Hebrew #1754) in Isaiah 22:18: He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a BALL into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lords house. He uses the word חוּג chuwg (Strongs Hebrew #2329) in Isaiah 40:22: It is he that sitteth upon the CIRCLE of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: Anyone claiming that there was no Hebrew word for sphere is plainly ignorant. The author of Isaiah could have referred to the Earth as a three dimensional sphere. The fact that he did not do so, means that he believed it to be a flat disk. The Bible portrays a flat earth. If you want to be a true Bible believing Christian, you have to agree with this. To do otherwise is to admit that the Bible is, at the very least, constrained by the knowledge of its iron age authors, and not a scientifically accurate text.
