Benjamin Elijah Mays was born in Ninety Six, South Carolina, the youngest of eight children of former slaves who were tenant farmers. He worked his way through college in jobs that ranged from church pastor to pullman porter. After earning his doctorate in 1935, Dr. Mays went on to serve as a pastor, college professor and dean, and finally as president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he was also a mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr. when he was a student there. After his retirement from Morehouse he served on the Atlanta school board and remained active in civil rights causes. He and his wife are buried side by side on the campus of Morehouse College.
