Every redneck has to have a “burn pile.” We had a burn pile , so I suppose that qualified us as rednecks!! We, Carey’s , didn’t plan it that way , but living on a farm in the country…it just happened! Saturdays were special. Why? Because we went to the burn pile!! Someone would jump in the pick up (with or without a license) back up to the house, and shout , “I’m going to the burn pile!” Kids would come pouring out of the houses whoppin’and hollerin’ and start loading up all the trash that had accumulated that week. They would start arguing about who was going to be the favored one to light the fire as we bobbled down the lane with our precious cargo. We kept the matches in the glove compartment so they were handy at a moment’s notice. Someone always exclaimed that they hoped there were a few aerosol cans mixed in that would ignite to make it all a little more exciting. We stayed until everything was completely burned , stirring the embers trying to make the moment last a little longer!! Being rednecks ,we put the Ford pick up to good use time after time as we hunted foxes in the hay field . One would drive among the bales of hay while someone rode shot gun. There were other things we did that hinted at us being rednecks like tying the snow saucer on the back of the four wheeler in the summer and racing it back and forth across the huge yards of grass that connected all our houses!! We cheered as each kid tried to hang on and then erupted into laughter as they inevitably tumbled and fell off. Then there was always a chance after a heavy rain storm that a pool of rainwater would inundate our back yard, and we could put that snow saucer to good use again and see how far we could slid without getting mired in the mud!! Even video-taped ourselves so we could enjoy watching it later. ( We ‘re still watching it years later.) Of course every redneck knows what it’s like to dump the garbage in the manure spreader and have a ‘possum jump out at you!! And what redneck kid hasn’t tried to ride on the back of one of the hogs or calves in their pens …sending “slop” and “do-do” every which way while trying to hang on?? You might call it being a redneck but really……we just called it having fun! “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine..” Prov. 17:22.
