Every so often, I will watch a movie, usually something in the science fiction genre, or an action flick. Today, I was feeling a bit tired, and short of breath, so I laid in bed for a while, watching “Scorpian King”. As I watch, usually, my mind wanders to things that have absolutely nothing to do with the movie. Today I had a train of thought that I just have to share. So many times, we watch a movie, and we focus on the main character, or the main story we see in front of us. For instance, in the scene where this thought took place, Mathias and his brother are being pursued on horseback, through the town, by the evil king. They are riding for their lives. As they ride through, they crash through stalls, the horse knocks people down who are carrying bundles, and baskets. They ride through at an alarming pace, not noticing, or caring who is in their path, tearing down tents, breaking carts, even at one point, destroying a vendors market stall and all his produce. They are in a flight for their lives, and the viewer would naturally be cheering them on, because after all, we don’t want them to die. I started thinking though, what about those people that were the victims of that destruction? What could have come about from that wanton destruction we are cheering on? Maybe the vendor who’s stall was destroyed has a sick child at home, depending on his sales for the day? Maybe that person who was carrying that jug of milk that Mathias just destroyed had spent all morning collecting it, or maybe he paid his last wages to get it for his family, and now it was gone. Maybe that tent that they rode through was all, the home those people had, and now it was gone. So while we are cheering this destruction, what is the actual cost? Sometimes in life, we may be cheering for something, without balancing what it will cost. While something looks good, and worthy to be cheered on, do we ever stop and really look deep into what that “victory” will cost others? We cheer for wars to assert our claims on land, but what is the cost? Do you ever stop, when you read we have “won” a battle, and think of how many lives were changed to win that battle? How many men, women and children lost something through that battle, on BOTH sides? When you hear news of a group of Marines killed in action, do you stop for a moment and think of how many wives, are crying, how many mothers are destroyed, how many children have lost their parent? We have become so focused on the main “story”, we have lost sight of what is involved surrounding that story. Our perspective has become narrow, our vision clouded, and our humanity defunct. I think of this in regards to people of faith, and how so many times, we are so focused on “winning souls” we forget the hundreds of other little stories unfolding around us. Lives to be touched, reached, through simple gestures, and recognition. Do not lose sight of the little things, by being so focused on your “ministry” or you calling, that you cease to see the many little ways God has called you to bless others. Widen your perspective, and watch all around, not just on the main character of your journey. The goal is worth reaching, but the journey there is way more important. Enjoy the trip, and the people you meet along the way. Even the “extras” in your life’s journey, matter. They are part of your story too!
