Every so often you will read some of my major concerns about this city that I dearly love, where I grew up got my diploma and was taught to treat others how I would want to be treated. I also learned respect at an early age, especially for my elders. I live in this small town of Jellico when the economy was booming back in the late forties and fifties. I didn’t go to school with any African Americans, at that time schools were segregated and those that lived here in Jellico were bused to Lafollette to school. Times have changed since those years with the help of Dr. Martin Luther King. I went to Ohio, where I worked at Central Trust Bank For 5 years and had many African Americans as very good friends. After my children were born, I just considered myself a stay at home Mom and raise my two sons as their Dad was only home on week ends…His job keep him flying all over America and even Mexico. One of my closest friends Venita (Cissco) Johnson is the daughter I never had. She is the first African American to be elected by the people to any office in Campbell County. I consider it to be a great accomplishment for someone raised here in our town of Jellico. What’s more amazing is she got two hundred more votes for council than Les Stiers did for Mayor and she had more people than he to compete with. Now for the sad part: Cissco has endured the mayors threats, bullying, Intimidation, lies and even an attack by two summer program kids mothers and two male employees brought in to verity (lie) for the mayor who initiated or should I say instigated it during at a public meeting to try and embarrass Cissco in hopes she would resign. To this day I don’t know what he has against Ms. Johnson…but seems it’s carried over to Michael Johnson, whom the mayor let go or terminated last week. He has worked for the city for eighteen years and never been written up for anything during those years. he has three evaluations in his file that reports of two goods and an excellent worker. He just happens to be Cissco’s cousin. So After four years of the mayor doing things his way and creating 8 lawsuits during his tenure and possibly another. Two or three of those lawsuits will cost the city (citizens) because the city had no liability insurance at the time they were served. All these 8 lawsuits were never at any time discussed by the council for any wrong doing. Some are just now becoming clear the reason for these filing. Also two or three have been with the electric system which the mayor has control over that as well. My only concern is that the employees have to do whatever he says or their liable to be sent home. H He has three cops at city hall while he is at city hall. Their job is to patrol our town and etc…but he is evidently afraid of something or someone, or he wouldn’t have them just setting inside city hall for his protection!! So we have security guards instead of cops!! Just for the record….The council or the city cops is not responsible for the anguish he has caused on himself. He knows he’s done wrong and it will come to surface soon. A light will shine bright in his eyes.
