Every time we pull away from a conversation in the present to attend to something thats coming in from somewhere else, were working for Hal. Barry Ebert In 1968 Stanley Kubrick released his amazing movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey in which the ships computer, Hal, played a leading role. And Hal was not nice. Hal had its own program to follow and that led to some serious problems for the crew. So here we are, 13 years past the 2001 setting of the movie, and were all working for Hal. You know, Hal, that disembodied presence in your pocket that beeps, chirps, rings and calls to you without any concern about what it might be interrupting. Our ability to be totally present with what were doing has become very difficult, and yet if people are important to us, we owe them our full attention. Hal, of course, doesnt care about that, and never will. So we must take the steps to put Hal in its rightful place. That means that we train ourselves to put the person in front of us at the top of our priority list, and make Hal wait. Yes, really, Im not kidding, it can be done! But it isnt Hal who needs to be trained for that to happen, its us. Try it, you may like it. All the best, Wes Hopper Please forward to a friend!
