Every transformation leader would benefit from at least having an awareness of the Kundalini teachings. Todays Valuable Resource that Im bringing you is a review of: Kundalini: The Arousal of the Inner Energy, by Ajit Mookerjee: Kundalini is a summary of the traditional Tantric (Yogic) teachings about Kundalini, a spiritual form of latent bio-energy, and its arousal in the body through Yogic practice. In the books five short chapters, the reader is introduced to what Kundalini arousal is, including the traditional practices, symbols and significances associated with it, contemporary accounts of arousal experiences, and some clinical research into the phenomenon. The book is filled with diagrams and artwork from pre-modern India depicting Kundalini arousal through the chakras. The following review should not be taken not as an encouragement to read this book, per say, but as an inspiration to explore the topic of Kundalini further, be it from this book or from other sources. Five main topics, each expanded upon below, are covered in this books five chapters: 1. Colloquially, the term Kundalini refers to a spiritual bio-energy that lies dormant at the base of the human spine until aroused. However, in its absolute meaning and philosophical context, Kundalini refers to the latent or coiled up (literal meaning of Kundalini in Sanskrit) female energy that pervades the universe. When Kundalini is aroused, it travels up the center of the body, through the seven chakras, or energy centers of the body, until it reaches the highest chakra which is above the head. Here, it unites with cosmic consciousness, its male energy counterpart, and in doing so the individual experiences bliss, dissolution of the ego, and cosmic awareness. 2. Yogic tradition has developed highly specific practices to arouse Kundalini, that involve meditation, controlled breathing, and focusing on seed sounds from the Sanskrit alphabet, such as Om and Hum. 3. There are seven chakras, or energy centers, situated along the central line of the body that Kundalini energy passes through in the course of its ascent. As it passes through each chakra, it clears it of blockages and energizes it. The first chakra is situated beneath the base of the spine, and is the seat of the dormant Kundalini energy. The second is around the place of the reproductive organs; the third, the solar plexus; the fourth, around the area of the heart; the fifth, at the place of the throat; the sixth, between the eyes; and the seventh, four finger breadths above the head. The higher the chakra, the more sublime its spiritual energy is, with the seventh and highest chakra being the seat of undifferentiated cosmic consciousness. 4. Male-female union, as prescribed by Yogic practice, is seen as the next step in Kundalini awakening, for it brings together polar cosmic male and female energies, uniting them into one. Specific preparations, meditations, and Yogic postures are prescribed by Tantra to achieve this result. 5. Modern clinical observation has found that Kundalini arousal is often experienced as beginning in the feet, then running up the legs, the posterior of the torso, and the back of the head. Reaching the crown of the head, it bends over to run down the face, the throat and the front side of the torso, ending its circuit in the area of the groin. While this differs from traditional Yogic teaching that says that Kundalini begins beneath the spine and ends its course above the head, the author suggests a way to resolve this conflict. Clinical observation has also found that Kundalini arousal can cause various somatic symptoms, including the feeling of tingling, heat or cold in different parts of the body, seeing lights, blindness, hearing pitches, and many others sensations, which can be disturbing to the experiencer. However, these symptoms, results of bio-energy changes in the body due to Kundalini arousal, usually subside once the Kundalini circuit is complete. If you choose to read this book, I recommend starting with the fifth chapter which contains grounding examples of the Kundalini experience from modern times. I hope this review has aroused your interest in the topic of Kundalini. ~Jonathan.
