Every winter, the island of Kyushu in Japan plays host to one of the greatest avian spectacles on earth – the annual crane gathering, whereby up to 10,000 of these graceful creatures assemble en masse to escape the harsh Siberian winters. Comprising mostly White-naped and Hooded Cranes (although a remarkable seven crane species have been recorded), they congregate in the area’s fallow fields and rice paddies where they are both protected and fed by the local people.
