Every writer laments the lost days of old when publishers would cultivate and care for authors, instead of casino high roller treatment of authors as slot-machines in one-armed pursuit of a jackpot best-seller. Well, tell that to British novelist J. B. Priestly (1894-1984), who said this 50 years ago about the good old days--It used to be publishers wanted to have writers in whom they believed on their lists, and were often willing to keep them going for years. [Now they want] the the smash-hit book, no matter who writes it.
