Every year on July 9, the National Archives of Australia celebrate Constitution Day – a day that marks when Queen Victoria gave royal assent to the Constitution on 9 July 1900, creating the nation of Australia. One hundred and thirteen years later - in 2013, a referendum will be held at the upcoming Federal election to give Constitutional Recognition to Local Government. If Constitutional Recognition is supported, this will allow for direct Federal funding of Local Government. Councils rely on Federal funding to improve roads & community facilities. For example: - The Peninsula Recreation Precinct at Umina Beach received $3.1 million from the Federal Government’s Regional & Local Community Infrastructure Program - The Regional Development Australia Fund provided $2.5 million for the Narara Valley Sporting Precinct By saying yes in the referendum, residents are voting to continue to access this funding, which contributes to major projects in the Gosford LGA.
