Women participation in politics in The Gambia is on the cusp of significant progress. Many women campaign organisers (Yayi Compins) drawn from all the political parties in The Gambia - APRC, UDP, NRP, PDOIS and PPP, yes PPP are alive and kicking - are taking part in a workshop for women to take part in politics. The Communications Officer of the National Youth Parliament asked one of its representatives on the state of the party, he said: well I can confirm to you that we are as good as when we were in the 80s. The mood at the training in NaNa Conference Hall is febrile, with members of different parties having reasonable debates over bottlenecks that impedes women from taking part in politics, electoral reforms, enforcing the quota system designed for equal gender representation. There was some flashy bout of tetchy exchange between different party officials over the police refusal to grant permit to opposition parties to hold rallies. Real debates on issues that matters are going on. As Gambians go to the polls to elect a president in 2016, the ground is being prepared by Civic Education Council for a misunderstanding - free election. Election is a process, not an event. Thumps up to NCCE.
