Everybody loves light houses. So what else can a guy do, with little to do on a cold January Sunday, other than look up a few more favorites from his lighthouse photos. Of these most interesting and strategic of structures are Gibraltar light, which has long guarded the fabled Pillars of Hercules. It stands between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Clockwise to starboard, is our own Cape Henry Light. The site, standing between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic has guided mariners from around the world for four hundred years. The first federally funded light, is the adjacent stone structure standing here in dignified retirement. George Washington had ordered its construction as on of his first tasks as President. Then as now, its location as an important way mark for the peaceful, has also stood as a bulwark against those of evil intent. Next is the most beautiful of nautical markers, Italian: The Salute. Little boats, like gondolas, ferries, and water taxis keep it to port, when sailing up Venices Grand Canal, while large vessels keep it to starboard. Constructed in 1631, it is dedicated to Saint Mary. The devout still credit her for the citys safety and deliverance from pestilence such as the great plagues of medievel times. (Salute translates into English as good health.) I once stayed at its Monastery some fifty years ago. So stay warm and keep healthy. Springtime and sailing will return.. Capn:-)
