Everyday Instruction: Proverbs 1:7 "7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." In Corpus, Pastor Adam Thornton and I met a man panhandling for wine money. We tried to talk to him about food, and shelter, and we did talk to him about Jesus. Unfortunately he wanted wine. I offered him prayer and we did pray with him which was an amazing part of our encounter on the street. Each time we offered something other than wine he added another foolish excuse. “I promise, I’ll just drink a little”; “It’s my Birthday, you want a guy to be happy on his Birthday”; “I will but some food”; and one that astounded me “I’m a Veteran” (showing me a wrist band). He had already said it was his 53rd Birthday. I asked if he served in Vietnam? He said no “Afghanistan, I did three years”. He would have been older than 41 went he went into the Army! I’m not calling him a fool, in fact my heart really went out to him, and I am still earnestly praying for him. But when we want to stay in our sin, we become foolish and despise the very wisdom and instruction that we need. Fear of the Lord, on the other hand, is the beginning of knowledge. It isn’t the ending, but it is a good place to start! I invite you to a place of fear and reverence of God that allows you submit yourself to His Word that you may be informed.
