(Everyday until Christmas, The Polyester Ball will be counting down the twelve most performed holiday songs of the last one hundred years.) THE 12 SONGS OF CHRISTMAS #4 - Merry Christmas Darling No. 4 on our list, Merry Christmas Darling by THE CARPENTERS was written by Richard Carpenter and Frank Pooler and originally recorded in 1970. At the time, it was only available as a 7 single from A&M Records. The single went to No. 1 on Billboards Christmas singles chart in 1970, and did twice more in 1971 and 1973. In 1978, The Carpenters issued their Christmas Portrait album, which contained a new remix of Merry Christmas Darling. The major difference between it and the 1970 version is a newly recorded vocal by Karen Carpenter. Other versions of the song have been released, including one by actress Lea Michele for the second season Christmas episode of the hit TV series, Glee, entitled A Very Glee Christmas, in 2010. The song has also been covered by Natalie Cole, Amy Grant, Vanessa Williams, Phil Vassar, Boyz II Men, Deanna Carter, and Chicago.
