Everyone has these things theyve made, theyve saved, theyve treasured which will not last. And, I have these things I treasure, too, which will not last. I am recalling an account from the Civil War diary of a white southern plantation woman in which she laments greatly the arrival of the Union soldiers and the havoc and destruction they reek. In particular I am reminded of the account she gives of the soldiers destruction of her mothers beautiful carved cherry wood armoir which had crossed the Atlantic with her great-grandmother. And I am thinking, (though I must paraphrase as I have no clue at the moment where to find this passage in the New Testament) of Jesus, pointing to the temple in Jerusalem, an institution, a structure which had stood for hundreds of years, and saying to his disciples that very soon not one stone would remain upon another much to their disbelief. I look at the fine houses in this neighborhood I live in, the beautiful materials of wood, stone, brick and mortar, the brilliant architecture. Americans cannot imagine the end of this structure, wealth, society, insulation, governance. Thats why its hard for us to truly grasp Global Warming.
