Everyone in this world exist for a purpose, everyone is chosen for something. We paediatricians are privileged and blessed to witness one of the most phenomenal miracles on the planet, the birth of a baby. We are chosen by HIM to bestow our best to the society especially the younger mankind. Just one of many regular days at my workplace at the neonatology centre while receiving a newborn a series of strange thoughts traversed my mind. As I was examining the newbie i was wondering its so strange that this baby doesnt know where it came from, doesnt know why it came, doesnt know who are the parents, doesnt know its religion, cast, nationality, race, doesnt have any political allegiance , its simply an innocent and completely innocuous tiny life having just landed on this planet. But once its being taken home, it will get a name, religious designation, a nationality, clan and every possible means of identity. While I was looking at this innocent creature I could not resist thinking witnessing the current commotion in the world what does the future hold for this kid, the very thought is quite cynical. Is he gonna be yet another mediocre life added to the ever growing population or something more!. Something more of constructive or destructive!. He(no gender bias here) may grow up to be a celebrity or a corrupt and unconscionable politician, a plutocrat industrialist or an autocrat ruler, a fraudulent baba or yet another hedonistic hooligan committing crimes on women,is he going to be a perpetrator of a wrong doing or a protector from the same, his future seems to be so uncertain. The real question is does anyone of us have any control on his future, well maybe yes but nevertheless its refutable. We all know that we cant layout anyones future but we can certainly contribute to it constructively. The most important role is played by the child s first teachers, the parents of course. If all of us, whether we are parents or prospective parents, reemphasize on inculcating absolutely non negotiable moral values as a cultural mandate into our children today, besides only working on their career development , we can, to a much larger extent ,steer his growth towards peace and harmony, towards true humanity, towards ethicality, towards benevolence, towards making him selflessly compassionate and then perhaps we can expect the next century to be a lot serene and inhabitable. Our awesome responsibility to ourselves , to our children and to the future is to create ourselves in the image of goodness, because the future depends on the nobility of our imaginings. I am aware most of the parents do have this thought but we need to ask ourselves are we doing our best, are our children today really imbibing the true moral values , is our society contributing enough, simply because what we sow is what we reap. A good upbringing means not that you wont spill sauce on the tablecloth but that you wont notice it when someone else does!. Dear friends with the dawn of the new year , optimism upheld, let s ruminate on this one for this is the only way we can perhaps expect some paradigm shift in the long run to make this world a better place for all of us.
