Everyone is mad at Henry Rollins for his article on suicide. On one hand he fails to understand the way depression and suicidal ideation work. You cant just get over it because of responsibility. If anything the guilt of feeling suicidal and disappointing/failing loved ones adds to the downward spiral. But I do understand Henrys statement that people who commit suicide blew it. In his Henry way hes saying life is precious, and while it may look grim and hopeless, there is hope and beauty out there if you can just pull through. He mentioned that for the sake of people whose lives were taken from them pointlessly (i.e. Robbery homicide victims) that we owe it to them to choose to live. It isnt the easiest concept to debate publicly, but I think the message of just live is far from the most offensive thing out there. Even if it is delivered a little insensitively and wrapped in athletic shoe commercial psychology. We need to be careful that in our attempt to empathize with those who attempt or contemplate suicide that we dont mistakenly edify it. It IS the wrong choice. Its on the rest of us to identify those stuck in that pit and try to help them out. Love your neighbor. And live, baby, live.
