Everyone know where the head of the Roman Catholic Church is located.. The Vatican in Rome! But where is our Greek Orthodox one, located? CONSTANTINOPLE!!!!! (presently called Istanbul, in Turkey). Here are some facts about the Phanar, where our head church The Ecumenical Patriarchate and leader the Patriarch are located. 1. The Phanar, is an ancient suburb in Constantinople, where prominent Greeks lived, after the Turkish Occupation. Since the conquest and conversion of Hagia Sophia to a mosque, this is where our headquarters are located. 2. The Main Church is named after St George 3. The Patriarchate of Constantinople, is considered the first among equals by all the Other Orthodox churches. 4. The founder was St Andrew the Apostle 5. 300 Million people look here for spiritual advice and leadership! 6. The city is Considered the New Rome 7. The Patriarchate of Constantinople, is one of the fourteen Orthodox Patriarchates. However, it is considered the mother church. 8. The Holy Synod, a council of bishop, is located here. It is they, who meet and discuss important theological matters within the church, including the canonization of a Saint. How intriguing is this!!!
