Everyone knows that when it rains, the ground becomes wet. However, there is one exception and it is known as “phantom rain”. This unique natural phenomenon is described as rain that falls and evaporates in the air before hitting the ground. Phantom rain is characteristic of deserts. According to various reports, rain pours down from the sky but the ground never gets moist. What is the explanation of this phenomenon? It is a well-known fact that deserts are very hot and dry. As the surface layers of the sands are quite heated, due to the high temperature rain evaporates on its way from the sky to the earth before reaching the ground. So, rain drops from the sky but nonetheless the arid and thirsty ground still remains dry and hot. As Edward Abbey puts it, the phantom rain is an unfulfilled hope for water that tortures all living creatures in the desert. It’s a phenomenon as unique as only nature can be!
