Everything about President Lincoln is fascinating to us – and by “us” we mean “you” too. Here, on March 28, 1864, President Lincoln endorses a telegram form. His fingers were smeared with ink, as they often were as he mined through tall piles of paperwork, usually with his secretaries, John Hay and John Nicolay, standing by and managing the paper flow. As he scribbled his note and his “A. Lincoln” signature he smeared the ink, leaving behind the whorl marks of his fingertips on the page. There you go: a Lincoln endorsement with a partial fingerprint. Anything that makes him human – a mistake, a smudge, or even a shaky signature made late in the afternoon by a tired hand – makes Abraham Lincoln all the more fascinating. ow.ly/GyXDl
