Everything we do on a regular basis is driven by formed habits. It can be things like overeating, eating the wrong foods, smoking, lazing on the couch, quitting, and so on. Forget the idea of “breaking habits”. That’s like trying to stop a truck by standing in front of it. Habits need to be weakened gradually AND replaced by a good habit. Feeling stressed? Don’t head for the fridge next time. Instead, go for 10 minutes on the heavy bag, or go for a short walk. Craving some chocolate? Go and brush your teeth instead, or pop a sugar-free gum in your mouth and call up a friend for a chat. Don’t try to stop a habit cold turkey. Just take alternative options now and then for starters. Gradually the healthier alternatives will become more and more frequent, until the bad habit has been replaced for good.
