Evidence has piled up recently favoring walkable streets. Ample research now shows that overbuilt streets are unsafe and wasteful. The conventional suburban thoroughfares are so vast and extensive that they will never all be reformed. But for the sake of our economy, for the growing demand for mixed-use neighborhoods, for health and safety, for communities, and for the environment, many of them must change. New streets, where they are built, should follow the pattern that works better—the smaller blocks of historic cities and towns.
