Ex-Foreign Affairs minister, Ashiru’s corpse arrives Lagos The remains of the late former Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Gbenga Ashiru, arrived Lagos on Sunday. The body was flown aboard South African Airways with flight number SA060. Ashiru died on November 29 in a South African hospital after a long battle with a terminal disease said to be brain tumour. He was 66. Ashiru was Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, with concurrent accreditation to Lesotho and Swaziland, in 2005. The aircraft, an Airbus 349-600, landed on the runway at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos about 4.30pm. The body was received by the family led by Prof. Toyin Ashiru and ferried out of the aircraft into a waiting hearse. A former Managing Director of Daily Times, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, Mr. Olatunbosun Ashiru, Mr. Alaba Okupe, Venerable Oludare Otoki, Venerable Leke Dina, Sir. Kehinde Smith, a former Deputy High Commissioner in London, Ambassador Oluwatoyin Lawal, and Mr. Niyi Alonge as well as the son of the deceased were on hand to receive the body of the ex-Foreign Affairs minister. It was learnt that the brother of the deceased, who is a serving Ogun State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, accompanied the body from South Africa.
