Ex-Liverpool player Phil Thompson has blasted Chelsea, claiming they havent got a winning past. The former Red is now a pundit with Sky Sports and has defended the amount of ex-Liverpool players now plying their trade on television. As many as 24 Reds now regularly work in the media, a fact not lost on Blues boss Jose Mourinho. Recently the Portuguese said: Lots of people on TV, but nobody a Chelsea man: Carragher, Liverpool; Thompson, Liverpool; Redknapp, Liverpool. Lawrenson, Liverpool; Hansen, Liverpool. We don’t have one. When I retire, 75 years old, I go as a pundit to defend Chelsea on television. But Thompson believes the lack of former Chelsea players in similar positions is down to a lack of success down the years. Chelsea haven’t got what you’d describe as a ‘winning past, he said. Theyve only had success since Jose has been there. Maybe now with the Russian money you’ll see the next generation coming through in the years to come and the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole might become pundits. Thompson had a glittering career at Anfield winning seven league titles, an FA Cup and two league cups, in a 13-year spell with the Merseyside club. And the 60-year-old thinks himself and his fellow Reds have got the roles they have through the success they had in their playing careers. Theyve always had the likes of Ray Wilkins, who’s a former player that is always very supportive of Chelsea, he added. But the fact is that there weren’t enough Chelsea players who were good enough in the past.” He added: When youve been there, done it and got the T-shirt, what you say carries a lot of weight. mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/phil-thompson-claims-chelsea-havent-3105096#ixzz2sCUecDMD Follow us: @DailyMirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook
