Excellent news that 2 historic properties in the Greater Geraldton region are among 31 heritage projects to share in $1 million under the State Government’s 2014-15 Heritage Grants Program. Funding of $77,629 to Koogereena Homestead in Kojarena and $12,217 to the Belay Farm Group in Walkaway will assist the private owners to conserve and revitalise these very special heritage properties. Koogereena Homestead (pic 2) is a Federation Queen Anne-style homestead nestled amongst an Edwardian garden densely planted with mature palm trees and has great history. It has been a working homestead since its construction in 1911 and played an important role in World War Two as an army hospital and accommodation for women and children evacuated from Geraldton due to fears of a Japanese attack. The grant will assist in reinstating the homestead’s original circular driveway, repairs to tuck pointing and brickwork, and installation of a new damp proof course. The Belay Farm Group (pic 1) located on Evans Road in Walkaway is one of the few early farm complexes where the majority of buildings are still intact and in use today. Built in 1858, the farm helps tell the story of the early settlement of Greenough and the Mid West. The grant will assist with re-roofing and replacement of the gutters to the barn and tack room, along with urgent works to repair the stone walls of the barn and homestead.
