Excerpt Mother of Rain: #Remembering #Normandy70th Our task hadn’t seemed all that difficult, when studying it from the confines and safety of Cottesmore. A dozen or so guys from the Squadron, along with Sgt. Harootunian, were standing around a ping-pong size table, which had been fashioned into a topographic map, complete with rivers, bushes, and roads in miniature. The sort of model a toy train might come tooting through at any moment. But we understood that this was no toy and our mission no game. For the past week, we’d memorized that map and recited the names of unfamiliar landmarks: Merderet River, Chef du Pont; Ste. Mere Eglise; Cotentin Pennisula. Our objective was to cut the Germans off from the peninsula’s western half, and give our troops access to some highly valuable beachfront property, necessary for movement of troops and equipment by securing the main road that ran north and south. The plan called for jumping into Ste. Mere Eglise, or within a stone’s throw of it. Easy enough, Harootunian tried to reassure us, if our parachutes popped open when prompted, and as long as we didn’t get our asses blown off on the way down
