Excerpt from Chapter VIII Reinventing Yourself (Graceful Endings, p225) by Linda Kavelin-Popov A New Season: As Ive said, the journey of grief has elements of Post-Traumatic Stress. Some of us even have a startle response when we hear a siren, or wake in the night sweating from nightmares. My sister-friend, Cheryll Simmons, one of the most literate, eloquent women I know, emailed me what I consider a perfect description of this phenomenon: Healing... my mind is on healing. I picture trauma ripping and melting the myelin sheaths off nerves, the nerves that need this protection in order to insulate us from total vulnerability and the superlatives of everyday emotions: sadness becomes despair, worry becomes hopelessness, regret becomes self-blame, fear becomes panic and paranoia. Now those sheaths must grow back, so I can be in one place at a time, able to read my book - a statement instead of some syllables, a page instead of a paragraph - without the terrible black wings of disaster flapping in my face.
