Excerpt from my book 99 Things You Wish You Knew Before Losing Fat 4 Life! The fact is that any loss of muscle is a victory for the fat side. Fat wins every time you lose even an ounce of muscle. To spare muscle, you’ve got to reduce the level of cortisol and/or raise your level of anabolic hormones. I’ve already mentioned that cortisol is increased during a reduced-calorie diet or fasting—which is one more reason most diets don’t work! The more unreasonably you restrict yourself on a diet, the more stress is felt by the body and the more cortisol is produced. Almost every one of your body’s 100 trillion-plus cells can burn either fat or glucose as fuel, but the brain—under non-fasting conditions—relies heavily on available glucose for energy. Your brain uses almost one-half of your body’s total blood sugar (approximately 100 grams) per day. Unlike the other organs of the body, which require insulin to pump glucose into their interiors, your brain is able to absorb glucose independent of insulin, which gives it first priority over the other cells of the body. That is, unless insulin levels are kept chronically high through consumption of insulin-spiking carbs all day long and staying up late in the evening. - See more at: transforminghealthinc/blog/yikes-diets-actually-create-stress/#sthash.uojFCrlq.dpuf
