Excerpt from my book, “Glory to Glory: One Man’s Account of His Spiritual Journey” “Cousin Emma said, “Son, walk in the light.” Even at 14 years old, I thought to myself, “How can I walk in the light all the time?” As I grew older (my body changing, desires increasing, exposed to other kinds of thinking different from what church folk, experiencing hardships, questioning my beliefs, teachings, faith, etc.) I became more confused...........walk in the light? Years later, through ups and downs, experiences, receiving others’ opinion (when asked for and not) I still struggled with what Cousin Emma said…”Walk in the light”? As He is in the light! Can we ever attain to this? Shall we ever be able to walk as clearly in the light as he is whom we call "Our Father," of whom it is written, "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all?" Certainly, this is the model which is set before us, for the Savior himself said, "Be ye perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect;" and although we may feel that we can never rival the perfection of God, yet we are to seek after it, and never to be satisfied until we attain to it. “Walk in the light as He is in the light”… I conceive it to import likeness, but not degree. .I am heartily striving to be in the light, as sincerely in the light, as honestly in the light, though I cannot be there in the same degree or measure. For example, I cannot dwell in the sun, it is too bright a place for my residence, but I can walk in the light of the sun; and so, though I cannot……WILL NEVER… attain to that perfection of purity and truth which belongs to the Lord by nature as the infinitely good, yet I can set the Lord always before me, and strive, by the help of the indwelling Spirit, to conform to his image. Philippians 3:13-15 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. My prayer each day…. Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
