Excerpt from my interview with Kat Epple for the chapter, The Courage To Be Yourself. Hank: A lot of your music has had what I would consider archetypal themes and a really deep sense of wonder. What have been some of your personal muses that tempted you into certain musical directions? Kat: One is a tornado. That’s always been a big influence in my music. I was outside in a tornado when I was a child. I knew the weather was turning very bad, and I was trying to run back home and was stopped and paralyzed in my tracks, and all around me was the most beautiful music I’ve still ever heard. It was all around me and inside of me – these chords that were playing. And then, shortly after, the tornado hit and I was in dire danger, but that sound paralyzed me and was so beautiful. I’ve tried to recapture at least the feeling of that experience, of music so beautiful that it fills you; it stops you in your tracks. Hank: So the music came through the tornado? Kat: Yes. Then I thought, well I must have been just imagining it, but I have read since that sometimes a tornado does create music right before it hits. It was like a chorus of huge flutes and huge chords, so it wasn’t just one. So that was one of my muses. Another thing that inspires me a lot are my dreams. I dream in music; all of my dreams have soundtracks. (Laughs) So sometimes I wake up in the morning thinking, “Wow, that is so good,” and I try to reproduce it. I only get close. I never really capture it, but some of the music is really amazing. Of course, it’s created on instruments that don’t exist, which is okay (laughs). You can create them. And as far as exterior themes, I was and am very much a science fiction fan and also have been studying spirituality and world traditions for all of my life I would say. So those are some of my influences. innerhero.wordpress/
