Excerpts from My Journal......Ways to improve your Memory..... * Do the limitations of your memory drive you mad? Does the word, name or date you want constantly elude you ? If so, its probably not your brain thats at fault - you just need to learn to use it better. Rita Carter explains what the science of the brain can tell us about the art of remembering. Human memory is not meant to be perfect. Its primary purpose is to guide our current actions by pulling on past experiences. Some experiences will be more useful in this regard than others. The memory of being bitten by a growling dog, for instance, is likely to be more instructional than that of stroking a cat. Hence ,the brain is designed to hang onto dog - biting moments long after cat stroking ones have disappeared . Most experience falls into the cat stroking category. Indeed , most things that happen to us are discarded almost as soon as they occur, to prevent us from becoming gunged up with useless information. An effective memory is selective , distorted, often vague and ultimately forgetful. That said , no function well in day-to-day life you need to store a vast and fairly accurate data base of past events, skills, words, names, facts, plans, locations. You need to be able to hold a phone number in mind for long enough to dial it, match faces to names, recall where you left your keys, remember where you went for your last holiday and know your own post code and pin numbers. Failing in such matters does not necessarily suggest that your memory is failing. It may be that you are simply using your memory ineffectively......These techniques should help you use it more effectively...............( to be continued!!!!)
