Executive Director Retires Steve Baldwin’s name is synonymous with Black Hills Parks & Forests Association, a non-profit cooperating association operating out of Wind Cave National Park. He has been involved with the organization as a volunteer and staff person for close to thirty years, the last 18 years as the Executive Director. Recently, Steve announced his retirement from the organization effective September 30. During his tenure at Black Hills Parks & Forests Association, Steve single-handedly oversaw 12 public land sales outlets representing several federal and state agencies. He was also responsible for a tremendous amount of sales growth from $200,000 to over $500,000. “Our growth over the years can be attributed to normal growth in the tourism industry coupled with a cooperative effort between the Association and our Agency partners to develop and implement new product lines, a process that must continue for Black Hills Parks & Forests to remain viable,” comments Steve. Four years ago, Steve was able to hire an Operations Manager to assist him with the growing business. Patty Ressler joined the organization in 2010. BHPFA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Patty will become the new Executive Director. States Board President Colleen Hennessy, “We are so glad to have someone familiar with the organization take on this role, creating a seamless transition. “ A native of Custer, Steve has had several vocations throughout his life, including owning and operating a gas station, and working as a blaster on Crazy Horse Memorial. But it his passion for exploring caves that led him to become involved with Black Hills Parks & Forests Association. Steve has been instrumental in the exploration and discoveries at several area caves including Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park, two locations where Black Hills Parks & Forests Association operates sales outlets. Black Hills Parks & Forests Association cooperates with federal and state partner agencies in promoting public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the Black Hills’ natural and cultural heritage. This is done through the operation of sales outlets throughout the Black Hills, offering a variety of interpretive products for those wishing to learn more about the natural scenery and rich history of the Black Hills and Nebraska National Forest. The Association uses proceeds from its sales to provide financial aid to these partner agencies. Aid monies are used to fund interpretive publications, internships, purchase educational supplies and equipment, and serve as matching funds for grant requests.
