Exerts from a love letter to Servatius Rogerus.> “For the rest, my dear Servatius, what reason is there to withdraw and conceal yourself so determinedly, like a snail? Indeed, I suspect, what really is the case, that you have not yet become persuaded of my supreme love for you. So I beg you, by all that is sweetest to you in life and by the great love we share, if you care at all for your own health and if you wish me to be preserved unto life, not to strive so much to conceal your feelings but to ‘confide to safe ears all that your heart contains.’ For my part I will help you in any way I can ‘either with aid or counsel’ but if I can do neither of these things it shall still be my delight to rejoice and to weep, to live and to die with you. Farewell, dear Servatius, and please look after your health.”
