“Expanding the frontiers of progressive internationalism and working class solidarity continues……”-COSATU on Burma Workshop Norman Mampane, COSATU Communications Officer, 12 June 2014 The Congress of South African Trade Union in 2012 11th National Congress took a resolution to support the struggles of the people of Palestine, Swaziland and Western Sahara. Today, the 12th June 2014 at the Federation’s Head Quarters, at Braamfontein, Johannesburg, a Burma workshop was held to take forward COSATU’s resolutions a practical platform. ‘COSATU has geared itself to expanding the frontiers of progressive internationalism and working class solidarity in the current conjuncture. ‘And the suffering of the people of Burma is one exception for consideration’ said COSATU International Secretary, Cde Bongani Masuku. ‘Burma is the last consideration on outrageous challenges of child labour, child soldiers and trampling of workers’ rights’, says Advocate Shabnam Mayet Human Rights Lawyer from Protect the Rohingya. She continued and said ‘’the government and the police are complicit in the human rights violations of Rohingya people’. ‘We appeal to COSATU to campaign for social justice for the Royingya people in Burma and on the 13th June, we will be observing the International Day of Wearing Black to raise our voices’, Comrade Vuyo Bikitsha from World Federation of Trade Unions [WFTTU] said ‘ WFTU supports the struggles of the working class across the globe. The exploitation of the tooling classes by imperialist, with sole interests of mineral resources and other commodities must be challenged’. ‘WFTU will continue to rally behind all national groups and monitories to end any form of trampling of their rights for capitalists gains’, concluded Cde Vuyo Bikitsha The workshop was attended by COSATU Affiliates, WFTU and addressed also by Zahra Mayet from Protect the Rohingya. Solidarity networks will be consolidated with labour formations to take the struggles forward concluded the workshop.
