Experts have called on teachers and administrators of primary and secondary schools in the country to introduce pupils to information communication technology at an early stage. A computer scientist with the Redeemer’s University, Mr. Adewale Ogunde, who gave the advice during the 15th Redeemer’s Day, explained that such an early ICT exposure would enable pupils to become experts in the technology-driven world. Annually, nursery, primary and secondary schools under the aegis of Christ Redeemer’s School Management converge to mark the Redeemer’s Day. The day, set aside to celebrate the founding of the schools, is also an occasion during which participating schools compete for prizes, as they display various projects in the arts, sciences and technology. Ogunde, who was one of the judges in the ICT competition, said, “The foundation is very important. When we expose pupils in primary and secondary school to ICT, they will not have any problem in adapting to their environment when they enter higher institutions. “Without IT, we cannot achieve anything today. For instance, the Internet is where most students will get information, as teachers cannot teach everything in the class. Being ICT-compliant, therefore, will equip them with the requisite skills to function positively in the cyber space,” Ogunde said. Head, Organising Committee for Art and Science, Mrs. Olufunke AyinOluwa, said, “It is a day we remember our Redeemer. It is like our founder’s day — the day we remember our founder. God is the ultimate builder of life and children. It is a day we remember those who put together the schools of Redeemed Christian Church of God.” At this year’s celebration, pupils of the schools displayed their talents in the arts, ICT, sports and sciences at the event entitled “Overflowing Wisdom.” The wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, represented by Mrs. Ogungbe Titilayo, commended the pupils and described them as “overwhelmingly creative.” The Chairperson of CRSM and wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mrs. Folu Adeboye, advised the pupils to be obedient to their parents and be hard working in their academic. Out of the over 115 nursery, primary and secondary schools that participated in the event, Christ The Redeemer’s International Secondary School Akure; Hope Academy, Mowe, Ogun State; and Redeemer’s International Secondary School, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, came first, second and third in that order in the Junior Secondary 100 metre race for boys. Redeemer’s High School (Camp, Ogun State); Redeemer’s International Secondary School, Maryland, Lagos; and Redeemer’s International Academy, Ifewara, Osun State, emerged first, second and third in the Senior Secondary School 4×100 metre relay for girls. A chemical engineer with MAD Science of Nigeria, Mrs. Ify Igbokwe, was one of the judges for the science exhibition. Some of the projects on exhibition include blender, hand fan, speedboat and dehulling machines.
