Exploring the giants of Zion .. Did you now that Zion National Park is the first National Park in #Utah - #USA? This magnificent, serene place located in the middle of Utah is a must for any avid hiker. Pioneers walked the same paths you will explore. The First Nations people once roamed this land. The colours of the wonderful sandstone will sweep you away with the beauty to see. Nature is rich in this part of the world with a wilderness filled with plants and animals indigenous to the area. While a wander or quick visit will not disappoint, hiking the canyons in perhaps the very best way to appreciate and explore Zion. Be sure to pay attention to you park map and guide for further details after entering the area. Like any hiking experience, be sure to set yourself up for success by being prepared. This means the appropriate food and water rations as well as excellent footwear and proper coverage from the elements. If well prepared, your hike and exploration will be peaceful and easy as you take in this amazing area. The Subway The Subway makes for a super half-day or full day hike depending on your speed and ability. Hikers will explore most of the slot canyon within Zion. This hike is somewhat strenuous therefore not for those without some level of ability. But the views and scenery are worth the effort. There are creeks to wade through, a canyon to negotiate, pipe-like gorges to explore and some steep descents and climbs to test your limits. Access to the Subway trail is granted by the National Park and a pass must be requested in advance of your trip. This is a truly amazing hike and one of the best ways to see all that Zion offers. Pa’rus Trail Leaving from the National Park Visitors Centre, this easy hike is suitable for all travelers. Round trip is about a two-hour journey, again dependant on your level of ability and speed. The path weaves along the Virgin River with great views of the Canyon, immersing explorers in the giant rock towers of Zion. A perfect park introduction this paved trail is accessible for those pushing strollers and others wheelchairs. Therefore, it can be a little busy but is still worth the time for the panoramic views and spectacular photographic opportunities. Watchman This bright sunny trail is a moderate hike in the canyon. You will spend a lovely two to three hours exploring the rocks and nature of the area. To get the best out of the Watchman Trail, head out at the crack of dawn to catch the sunrise and avoid the much warmer temperatures in the day. This is one of the best spots for rattlesnakes, lizards and more. If you are looking to get the most out of your hike, look into booking a park ranger to guide you on this hike. The rangers are all loaded with amazing insight and knowledge of the area and will open your eyes to wonders you may not know existed. Other ways to explore While hiking is the primary focus of most visitors to Zion there are a host of other ways to truly enjoy the spectacular scenery in the park. Bike riding is available of the roadways in the park as well as the Pa’rus Trail. The sandstone cliffs are famous in the climbing world for big wall climbs, only to be attempted by the most experienced climbers. Another great way to see the sights could be on horseback. There are guided tours available. As with any National Park, be sure to stop in at the Visitors Centre, grab maps, speak to the rangers who are happy to help with any questions or needs.
