Explosion rocks North Cotabato public market The fish section of Kabacan public market in North Cotabato was bombed Monday night, January 19. North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño Mendoza confirmed there were no casualties in the latest explosion that hit North Cotabato province. In an interview, she said public vigilance and cooperation and force multipliers from local government units and barangays helped law enforcers in the province to have prevented a severe impact of the explosion. “Our force multipliers initiated by LGUs and barangays as well as civilian vigilance and cooperation helped our law enforcers, hence, there was no casualty reported in another IED (improvised explosive device) explosion in Kabacan public market,” Mendoza said. The blast occurred around 6 p.m.. Police recovered from the blast site nails, disintegrated mobile phone parts and burnt wires. In view of public vigilance and cooperation, Mendoza challenged the military and police to do their part to stop unlawful elements from sowing terror like bombings. “It’s up for the AFP and PNP with their capabilities and intelligence to stop the proliferation of IEDs,” Mendoza said. Unfortunately, another IED was found by authorities around 6:45am of January 20,2014 along the National highway of Barangay, South Manuwangan, Pigkayawan North Cotabato. The said IED was discovered by residents left beside the highway about 200 meters from the Patrol base of the Regional Public Safety Battalion of the PNP. The bomb was placed inside a black bag. When it was checked by the authoritie, the bag contained 105mm howitzer canon shell, wirings, and a handheld radio believed to be the triggering device. The two fresh incidents came just when an explosion destroyed the tower of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines in Pikit town, North Cotabato on January 18. This has prompted security forces to step up security along the area to prevent another massive power outage as investigations are still ongoing. Mendoza made the challenge to security forces following the sequence of bomb explosions and recovery of IEDs in various areas of North Cotabato. She cited the November 16 explosion in front of Kabacan Pilot Elementary School that left one person dead and a number wounded. In December 31, 2014, an explosion also hit the public market of Mlang, in North Cotabato. One person died from the blast and scores wounded. Judy Quiros with reports from Richy Nalagon
