Expression: Steal someones thunder. Meaning: To draw attention away from someone elses achievements in favour of your own. Origin: English dramatist John Dennis invented a gadget for imitating the sound of thunder for a play in the early 1700s. The play flopped but soon after Dennis noted another play was using his sound effects device. So, he deemed his thunder had been stolen. The story made the papers at the time and the phrase took on a life of its own. Thanks to Geoff for this tidbit.
