Expressions of Courage Black & White Photography Competition Deadline: September 28 Exhibit: October 8 - January 3, 2014 Courage- The ability to do something that’s frightening. The ability to push forward and move ahead despite the obstacles in one’s way. The ability to smile in the face of cancer, Parkinson’s, Down ’s syndrome or autism. For people who are facing chronic illness or disability, courage is conjured on a daily basis in that easy smile, steady gaze or clenched jaw demonstrating their hope, strength and determination. This exhibit celebrates the spirit of individuals facing chronic illness and/or disability through photographic display of black & white portraits expressing courage. Photographers of any age and skill level within 100 miles of New Castle are eligible to apply, however photographs must be original, black and white and printed to 11” x 14”. Photographs should be securely mounted and matted in white to 16x20. For consistency of presentation, the Hoyt will provide frames for the exhibition but return the work to the artist unframed. Photographs should depict an individual - patient, caregiver or medical professional - who is facing, caring for or treating a chronic illness or disability and be accompanied by a brief explanation (one paragraph) of the individual featured. Entries will be displayed in the upper level exhibit hall of Jameson Health System’s North Campus. There is a $10.00 application fee for up to two works. Cash prizes include; First Place- $150.00, Second Place- $100.00, Third Place- $50.00 and Nine Honorable Mentions- $25.00 each. To apply, please hand deliver to the Hoyt Center for the Arts on Saturday, September 28th between 11am and 4pm. Hoyt Center for the Arts reserves the right to decline entries if they are not adequately sized or prepared for display. An anonymous panel of artists and administrators from HCA and JHD will serve as Jurors. Space permitting, all work will be exhibited with priority given to those with the highest scores.
