Eyewatch - Latrobe Police Service Area Just now · A QUESTION ABOUT FISHING ROD HOLDERSHi folksA few weeks back I was asked “What is the law about rod holders for 4x4 bull bars? Is it legal to use them when there are rods in them and not when they are not in use?”I didn’t know the answer so asked our local Traffic Advisor Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Hullick and here is the answer he provided.Basically, fishing rod holders that are fitted to Bull Bars in Victoria are illegal whether they are in use or not. Fittings such as driving lamp brackets or fishing rod holders must not protrude above the top or forward of the bull bar as they may have sharp edges that protrude and they will cause a great deal of injury to anyone they hit. There are regulations surrounding the modification of vehicles and those regulations dictate that a modification to a vehicle must not result in any object or fitting protruding from any part of the vehicle in a manner likely to create the risk of bodily injury to any person. Any component, feature of object or fitting on the vehicle whose design, construction and/or condition and the manner in which it is affixed, is likely to create the risk of bodily injury to any person, this includes fishing rod holders. This is generally aimed at reducing the risk of injury sustained to person who is struck by a vehicle, including pedestrians and cyclists.More information can be found by visiting the VicRoads website and searching for the Vehicle Standards Information sheets. In particular, if you type VSI 1 and VSI 8 in the search function you will find information that specifically deals with bull bars and their attachments.I hope that clears thing up for folks.LSC Brett Godden, Community Liaison officer, Morwell.
